Thoughts on my future marketing career.

The more I read about the marketing industry the more I believe that it is undergoing significant change, propelled by the growing effect of the Internet on our daily lives.  Gone are the days when traditional advertising was trusted and appreciated.  No matter what platform on which it appears (Internet included), advertisements are vastly ignored unless they add value to the conversation somehow.

I read on a marketing agency’s website once (www.therepublik.net) that we need to start using “pull” versus “push” marketing tactics - tactics that are valuable and interesting in and of themselves.  These days, “push” advertising is becoming progressively easier to ignore and more people are learning to seek out interesting products themselves.  I think that companies should learn how to use creative programs and inventive marketing to not just target their customers, but interact with them and engage them.

It might be obvious that I am equally as interested in the theory behind marketing practices as the tactics themselves… I hope that I can find a company that encourages me to think about things like this and to apply this knowledge to each client’s marketing plans.  I am slightly afraid of joining a team of people who are dedicated to traditional methods of marketing - methods that are becoming increasingly irrelevant with each passing year.
