One of advertising’s classics!
I almost used this campaign as one of the case studies for my thesis, but my thesis advisor told me not to. Oh well. I still think it applies very well to my general argument that the most effective advertising appeals to cultural subsects and is based off of pre-existing cultural trends.
However, I think that Mac users tend to be less anti-establishment and more friendly, artistic, and free-thinking. Which is why I like their mild-mannered, humorous commercials today a bit better than this one. But I wasn’t born yet in 1984, so maybe I just don’t remember the wild, rebellious Mac users of the previous generation (but I have a hard time believing that… especially after seeing Woz on Dancing with the Stars…).
